Men, an element absent from “the mangle of care”? A look informed by the pandemic

| dc.description | Living in times of the Covid-19 pandemic made the issue of care and the perception of essential jobs that sustain life globally visible. Caring for others has always been considered a feminine or feminized act that, through the hands of women, establishes a network of care. That network, which I will refer to in this article as “the mangle of care”, was altered, the public-private domains were moved. The new scenario presents an unexpected dance of agencies of the human and the non-human, mixed with materiality and to analyze the presence/absence of men I use the theory of Andrew Pickering (1995) as a theoretical and interpretative model of the “dance of the agencies” of the new actors in “the mangle of care”, a kind of posthumanist displacement of traditional interpretive frameworks. Looking from a feminist perspective, which does not intend to build a new absolute truth about the phenomenon, but to contextualize it, I seek a performative and relational understanding of care. I propose a dialogue that considers care as a set of practices without gender, an existential, ontological need, inherent to existence and also interdependent and vulnerable. It is hoped that the participation of men in the division of care tasks has the potential to free us from the constraints of a binary gender model and allow new configurations in the mangle. | en-US |
| dc.description | Vivir en tiempos de pandemia de Covid-19 visibilizó globalmente el tema de los cuidados y la percepción de los trabajos esenciales que sostienen la vida. Cuidar de los demás siempre ha sido considerado como un acto femenino o feminizado que, a través de las manos de las mujeres, establece una red de cuidados. Esa red, a la que me referiré en este artículo como el “manglar de los cuidados”, se vio alterada, se movieron los dominios público-privado. El nuevo escenario presenta una danza inesperada de agencias de lo humano y lo no humano, mezclado a la materialidad y, para analizar la presencia/ausencia de los varones, empleo la metáfora del manglar utilizada por Andrew Pickering (1995) como modelo teórico e interpretativo de la “danza de agencias” de nuevos elementos, una especie de desplazamiento posthumanista de los marcos interpretativos tradicionales. Mirando desde una perspectiva feminista, que no pretende construir una nueva verdad absoluta sobre el fenómeno, sino contextualizarla, busco una comprensión performática y relacional de los cuidados. Propongo un diálogo que considera el cuidado como un conjunto de prácticas sin género, una necesidad existencial, ontológica, inherente a la existencia y también interdependiente y vulnerable. Se espera que la participación de los hombres en la división de las tareas de cuidado tenga el potencial de liberarnos de las limitaciones de un modelo binario de género y permita nuevas configuraciones en el manglar. | es-ES |
